The Smokestang — A Cummins Diesel Engine in a Ford Mustang

Vehicular FeatsBest engine swap

Kansas-based YouTuber Westen Champlin looked at a wrecked 2016 Ford Mustang and a 300,000-mile 12-valve Cummins diesel engine and thought: 'What if these two became one?' The result is the Smokestang — a Ford Mustang S550 powered by a 5.9-liter inline-six Cummins diesel with twin semi-truck turbochargers, producing over 1,200 horsepower and 2,200 lb-ft of torque. The engine is so massive it added 1,000 pounds to the nose, required airbag suspension to support the front end, and the turbo stack pokes through the hood like a factory smokestack. The Smokestang has been drag raced, towed a 40,000-lb cement truck for a Hollywood film shoot, and driven on public roads — terrifying the citizens of Wichita, Kansas along the way. It leaks fluids constantly, the throttle once stuck at 85 mph on the highway, and it billows enough smoke to qualify as weather. It is perfect.

Most iconic diesel-in-a-sports-car swap in YouTube history. Westen's 'Redneck Science' approach — starting from a wrecked car and a junkyard engine — perfectly embodies the DIY ingenuity TRWR celebrates. The Smokestang has been featured by every major automotive outlet and is recognized as one of the most famous YouTube builds ever.
